God opened people’s minds and the doors to the Centers for Globe volunteers to provide a weekly reading program. The volunteers are not ordinary volunteers, they each spent several years calling one or both of the center’s home.

Though the reading program is only a few weeks old, it is attended by more than 80 girls every week. As you know, reading is critical to their education and given the histories of the girls they are starting well behind. For many, even the older young ladies, this is first time they have been read to and enjoyed favorite Ethiopian children’s stories. Of course, it does not end when the book ends.

The girls talk, ask questions, want to be prayed for, share their personal stories, and let us know they want what every child wants-a family and a future. There is not much we can do about family, at least at this point in time, but we can listen, pray, and help where we can.  Now they ask staff to turn off the TV so they can show their improving reading skills and enjoy the cookies volunteers share with them.

The girls and staff let us know they need new backpacks for school. Through the generous support of friends of Globe, we just sent more than $1,200 to Ethiopia for Globe volunteers to purchase new back packs, school supplies, and more books in time for the new school year.  This is in addition to the $200 Globe sends monthly for the reading program.

I have included a few pictures and will be sending a video in a separate document of the reading program that has quickly become so much more.  We had a surprise visitor at one of the celebrations-Minnie Mouse.  For most of the children and youth, they had never met Minnie Mouse through books or videos.  They were excited!  Nothing but smiles and laughter.  Minnie Mouse was played by a local volunteer who grew up in the orphanage, heard about the program, and wanted to give back-and did she!

In one of the pics, you will see a 3 year old unable to use his hands.  Born with a disability, Johannes, has learned to use his feet to color the books volunteers have brought with them on reading day. His biggest smiles come when Globe volunteers hold him, talk to him, and simply love on him.

Next week is the big backpack give away.  Volunteers will go to the two centers and give the kids 115 backpacks, school supplies, reading materials, and snacks.
